all these rides on the kona with out an odometer is annoying to keep track of. from now on, im just going to calculate 5 miles each day for every day worked, assuming i ride. today i rode the 5.62 miles to and from work then i went out on the cannondale and did a nice paced ride. im inching closer and closer to the 20mph mark. today when the odometer hit 20 miles i switched it to time mode right away and the clock was at 1:00:36. a couple more rides and im there. so for today..

this is only the cannondale;

may 29, 2009 pt 1

saw a large number of bikers today. 2 or 3 group rides, one of which was leaving from the corner of my street. i pulled up and asked them if it was a club and they are, but a loose one. but most of them are from a group called the princeton freewheelers. i heard about them a while ago and didnt hear good things so i thanked and pulled ahead.

after a while i got yelled at by some people walking with a baby carriage. they told me to slow down. maybe i was too close to them? they were walking in the street though and a car was coming up behind me. either hard brake (mind you i have a possibly scratched fork), or swirve in front of BIG SUV. oh well. in the moment they had the right to yell.

i came .2mph average speed closer to the goal today. i was flying! if i didnt take a quick break on beekman i would have had it. oh well. this was the first time on the cannondale in a while. i can tell pulling the extra weight on the kona is making me stronger. need to work on hills though.

so...

got my first ride in a full downpour on the 27th. on my way to work it was rain rain rain the whole way there, but then sunny on the way back. but it was ok and not as bad as i though it was going to be. the kona is making a little weird clicking noise now though.
28th, i tried to ride to lowes to buy some for sale signs but it started raining on me again so i turned back. ended up just riding to and from work and thats all.
29th, evan and i went for a good 10-13 mile ride. i took the kona and this was the first time it was used for recreation. very nice ride and relaxing. didnt feel rushed at all. the need to go fast like when im on the cannondale was not there.

not having an odometer on my new bike is killing this blog. well, ive just commuted to and from work the past 3 days having been a little worn out to do any other riding. also, to my shock the kona fell off its hook the other day...
and struck the carbon fork on the cannondale!...

this has me a bit nervous taking the bike for a long ride even though i unknowingly took it out for a 21 mile trip where i got to 35mph. i may have to get the fork replaced! but we'll see.
so judging by what it usually is to work and back, here are my miles from the past 3 days...

two rides today. one on the cannondale which was nice and fast. then another on the kona which was nice, and relaxing. went to the bike shop first, then to work and the farmers market second. i only was able to log the first trip on the odometer, but the total miles today were good.

havent ridden much this week; rain. but i do have exciting news.

exciting news....

the kona smoke! i rode it to work yesterday and even though my booty was a little sore adjusting to the seat, it was a great ride. i can see why so many people are in love with this bike! right now, i dont have an odometer for it, so i wont be logging miles with it. but i will try and stick to rides that i have done before so i can have a general idea. i may log them, i may not. wooooo!!! kona!!

today i met my match!

i had to go to warren for something today so my ride was broken up into a couple small rides. around 9 to the train station, then a train ride, then 5 to the place in warren. well the train to warren ride had a suprise.

a 15% grade incline climb for about a mile!! i was defeated! a little over half way up my bike strayed off the road and i got off and walked the rest of the way. even the walk made my calves and ankles burn. while walking a cop was parked just near the top who i said "thats quite a fucking hill". he told me it was the second steepest incline road in the entire state! coming down i set my new fastest ride record. 41.9mph (while holding the brakes down!)

trying to make excuses have gotten off a bike and walked (the only time ive ever done that) i did have about 15 pounds of gear in 2 bags on me. one trunk and a book bag as well.

ill will be going back soon to try it again! :)

may 1, 2006 part one

in the past months i have been starting to use my bike as a means to commute with more and more. not having my driving license has given me more the reason to hope on the bike and get going to a local store or other destination.
with my job being on stand still due to epilepsy, and a half finished college degree i enrolled into raritan valley community college for the summer. my only trouble is how to get there. have bike, will travel!
looking at various styles and models ive come to an almost certain decision on my "commuter" so i didnt have to leave my cannondale outside locked up all the time. after doing more than a weeks worth of research (a week is a long time when you dont have a job to be at) this is the bike im going to get...

its made by Kona, a company that started with mountain bikes and eventually introduced road bikes too. in addition to the bike alone i will be outfitting it with all types of neat accessories! a quick release back rack...

and a LARGE back "trunk"...

eventually the addition of panniers or "saddle bags" will come to allow room for books, and maybe a laptop...

and i will be adding relective tape all over the bike in case i am commuting in the dark at times...

wish me luck in turning into a full time bike commuter!
